After the Christmas break, Ms. Malcom added a new piece of furniture to our classroom. It is a very old kitchen set. It is soooo much fun!

A Beautiful Poem from Ms. Adams!
Ms. Adams, our Speech therapist, wrote a very special poem for our class. She came by on Friday and read it to us. We were so touched by this poem and, by the end of it, Ms. Higdon, Ms. Stowe, and I were in tears. It represents our class so well. Thanks so much Ms. Adams for this very special gift. You mean the world to us and we appreciate all that you do for our students every day! You are a wonderful speech therapist and person!
Please read the poem below! I hope you are as touched by it as we were!
Reflections of the Season
Reflections of the Season
A Special Christmas Poem for Ms. Malcom's Class
Ms. Malcom, Ms. Malcom, such a super teacher at our school,
All she does with her children is just so cool!
South Salem Elementary has her class at the top
Addressing their needs, it just doesn't stop.
Kim's group has quite a mixture of beautiful kids
Each one so special, individual, and spirited!
When they do their work they are also accompanied
By caring and helpful parapros that Kim does lead
To address the children who have a mountain of needs.
So this Christmas poem is a reflection for every one
On a class full of learning, acceptance, and fun.
When one walks in her room you can spot DeAsia,
Works so hard and always tries to please ya!
She love Cheetah Girls and sings like a star.
Those searching eyes have come so far.
She's making strides in her learning each day,
So intense in her stare when on the computer she plays.
She's a reflection of wonderment and inquisitiveness,
A pleasure to teach, Ms. Malcom can ask for nothing less.
Now sweet and deep-voiced Joyria is the class' friend.
She listens, watches, and patiently attends
To her work on her lessons, talking, and wording
She's so happy to applaud her classmates as they are working.
Her kind, polite manner can surely entertain,
She's a reflection truly-- a JOY just like her name.
Little Grace who is always in her appropriate place
Waits with open arms for a picture to color or trace.
Her tiny hands move and she reaches out for a loving embrace.
Her name fits her, she's so full of God's grace.
She signs to Ms. Malcom and Ms. Adams too.
She lights up the class, loves her beautiful clothes, so new.
Her smile, her gestures so pure and innocent.
We know all how special and all that she has meant.
She's a reflection of God's grace and sweet patience.
Enoch is one of those handsome but real silent types,
Watches everything with his most captivating eyes.
He makes teaching a challenge by his laughs and antics- so dear
Sometimes it's hard, but you laugh too when his giggle you hear.
He can hum and rock to some great songs from Ms. Tracy.
I haven't yet heard all he has learned lately.
One has to know at times when he's putting you on,
He keeps by his side the soft-spoken Ms. Higdon.
Enoch is a reflection of wonder and awesome sweetness
Of seeing and learning of the world in its greatness.
La'Shawn the big "little" man in Ms. Malcom's class
Has sweet gentle voicing when he responds to most things you ask.
He has made friends in the school and talks to them in games.
He like the attention and is learning his new friends' names.
He never rushes but is intent on doing each new task-
Making sentences with words that are new or questions to ask.
I see he's a reflection of loving kindness, with his hands on his heart
He knows when and how in this world he is a special part.
Claire, the adorable and serious learner who does all she can
To speak all she knows and write with her petite hands.
She giggles and is so absorbed in her lessons
And practices so diligently in her speech sessions.
She talks of her family and Leo, her horse at home,
And around the school, we all can she how she has grown.
She talks, and walks like a sleek little kitten with a ball of string,
So eager and ready to see what the next day will bring.
She's a reflection of determination to discover all she can know
And we just cannot imagine how far she will go.
Now, the talents of Ms. Higdon and Ms. Stowe surely are
An addition to the class with their music and art.
Pitching right in as each day starts.
Breakfast and bathrooms, specials and library
Sometimes they even have to pick up and carry
A child to a chair or to a piece of school equipment
To the class they bring liveliness and much merriment.
They are a perfect reflection of gentleness and are exceptionally kind,
They attend to so many children, none better can you find.
Ms. Malcom, Ms. Malcom, I sure love your class
And now it's Christmas time at last.
That about does it to mention each special child
Who is much like the Christ child, gentle, perfect, and mild.
On this Christmas, may they each find love and have
A day of giving and presents to find that make them glad.
Ms. Malcom's class is truly special you see.
They are a reflection of what we cannot see.
They are not so different, so free to be who they are, be all they can be.
They are gifts from God and in many ways so much better that we.
They are just children who all as they live their lives.
They're teaching us lessons so that we can be wise
To teach them and give them all that they need to grow
Because, just because we know,
They are each a beautiful reflection....
A Reflection of God.
Merry Christmas to all in Ms. Malcom's Class!

Holiday Wrap-Up!
Over the last couple of weeks our students were given the opportunity to purchase gifts for their families from a holiday store that was set up by our school PTO.
Joyria bought gifts for her family and helped Ms. Higdon wrap them on Friday!
Drum Roll...............
The winner is...................................
La'Shawn!!!
Way to go La'Shawn! You did an excellent job during the month of December!
Presents, Presents, Presents!
On Friday we had our Holiday Celebration! We had a great time and enjoyed each other very much! Our students are loved so much. They received gifts from many people around the school, from their teachers, Speech therapist, substitutes, classmates, etc. Below are some pictures of our students opening their presents!
You can tell by the look on Joyria's face that she was very excited to be opening her presents!
Ms. Higdon helps Claire put together her Dora wand that she received!
La'Shawn opening his presents!
Celebrations Around the World!
For the past couple of weeks, we have been studying Celebrations Around the World in Social Studies! This has been a very fun unit. We learned about the different celebrations that occur around the world. We learned about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Los Posadas (Feliz Navidad), and Christmas! We also made various crafts to represent the things that we learned for each celebration. We displayed our work on a beautiful display (created by Ms. Higdon) in the hallway outside of our classroom! We made Menorahs and Stars of David for Hanukkah, Kenorahs and Ears of Corn for Kwanzaa, Poinsettias for Los Posadas, and various ornaments, etc. for Christmas! We had a great time and learned so much in the process!
It's Beginning to Sound a Lot Like Christmas!
It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas in Ms. Malcom's class! Last week, we got together with Ms. Frix's 3rd grade class and Ms. Culpepper's class to sing Christmas carols! The video below is, to me, a great example of what Christmas is all about! It is about the joy of being with one another!
Thanks Ms. Frix's class and Ms. Culpepper's class for joining us! We wish you a Merry Christmas!
B, B, Bubbles!
One day last week, we took a break to go outside and play with bubbles!
"These boots are made for walking, and that's just what they'll do...". We also took La'Shawn's walker outside so that he could practice walking. He did a great job! He especially loved running through the water to chase after Ms. Kelli (our room mother and Ms. Malcom sister)!
South Salem's First Christmas!
Sealed with a Kiss!
Happy Birthday Enoch!

Alphabet BINGO!
Today, we had a great time playing Alphabet BINGO!! Our students have gotten so good at it and can find the letters on their cards much better than they did at the beginning of the year!
La'Shawn and Enoch are ready to play Alphabet BINGO!! What on earth could Ms. Stowe and DeAsia be talking about?
Enoch did such a wonderful job with Alphabet BINGO! He found many of the letters independently! Way to go Enoch!
Learning About Producers!
In Social Studies, our 3rd graders have been learning about Goods, Services, Producers, and Consumers. With a little help from a few of our friends from Ms. Frix's 3rd grade class, DeAsia and Joyria became "Producers".
First, they were required to "Produce" a Good (in this case it was an ornament). They painted their ornaments!
Since we learned that "Goods" are things that can be bought and sold, they were then required to determine, with assistance from their friends, how much they want to sell their ornament for! DeAsia and Joyria picked out the amount that they wanted and their friends counted it for them.
Fun in Occupational Therapy!
We had so much fun in Occupational Therapy on Monday that I had to share these pictures with you! To work on fine motor skills, Ms. LaVerne had a very special activity for us to participate in. Ms. LaVerne brought some large tweezer-looking utensils (she called "chopsticks"). She displays them below!
