Pumpkin Face Tally Chart!

Last week we learned about similarities and differences, especially about the differences between a pumpkin and a jack-o-lantern. So, when it came time to carve our pumpkin, it seemed like the best opportunity to teach the students about Tally Charts. The plan was to set up a Tally Chart in which the students could make their individual choices about the face that they wanted for the class jack-o-lantern. The choices were a happy face, and scary face, or a sad face.

Joyria makes her choice. She wanted a sad face!

Enoch chose the scary face! Ms. Malcom helped him make a tally mark below his choice!

Claire closely watched as her classmates made their tally marks below their choices. When it was her turn, she was ready. She immediately went up to the ActivBoard and put a tally mark below her choice. She wanted the sad face!

After everyone made their choices and placed their tally marks below their choices, Ms. Malcom asked for volunteers to help her count the tally marks in each category. Grace did an excellent job counting the tally marks in the "happy face" category!

La'Shawn also did an great job. He counted the tally marks in the "sad face" category!

After this activity was completed, we went out in the hall to carve our pumpkin. There were more tally marks in the "scary face" category. Therefore, our class pumpkin will have a scary face!
