Hero Dogs!

For FUN FANTASTIC FRIDAY we read a current events article about the National Hero Dog Competition. Hero dogs are dogs that have been honored for helping people. After reading the article, we went onto the hero dogs website and read the stories of the eight finalists. Then, we chose our individual favorites so that we could cast our class vote!

After an initial vote, we had a tie. So.. We took another vote, voting on the two winning dogs. We came up with a winner and casted our class vote on the website!

After reading the article and casting our vote, we followed a picture recipe to make "Dog Chow" from cereal, powdered sugar, cake mix, and melted chocolate!

Our "dog chow" was delicious and a nice treat to go with our lunch!

SURPRISE!!!

As Ms. Malcom taught Science, little did she know there was a BIG surprise waiting for her in the parking lot! This is Ms. Malcom's niece (Blair) and nephew (Judd)!

We were all in complete shock when the Superintendent, other county office officials, the newspaper representatives, and Ms. Malcom's family walked in our classroom with flowers and a balloon to announce that Ms. Malcom was chosen as one of the TOP 3 teachers in the county!

Lots of pictures and interviews were taken for the newspaper. Happiness and excitement filled them room.

Ms. Malcom was so happy to have her family there. Ms. Malcom's dad, mom, sister, niece, and nephew came to surprise her!

Ms. Malcom is sooooo thankful for Mrs. Stowe every single day! She definitely deserves this honor as well.

The next step involves a classroom observation. The TOTY selection committee will come observe our classroom during a math lesson. The Newton County Teacher of the Year will be announced at a ceremony on October 25th. Keep those fingers crossed!

Ms. Malcom is SSES's Teacher of the Year!

At the end of last year, Ms. Malcom was chosen to represent South Salem Elementary School as the Teacher of the Year. This picture was taken of all of the Teachers of the Year from the county. There are 22 of them. All of these teachers completed a series of essays and will undergo an interview. The TOP 3 will be chosen and surprised in their classrooms during the school day. Fingers crossed!

Ms. Malcom is on the bottom row, fourth person from the left.

Our 1st CBI Trip- Tennis!

Last week, we went on our 1st CBI Trip. We went to City Pond to play tennis and enjoy a nice picnic. We had so much fun!

We began with a nice stretch! LOL!

Then, it was time to play!

Mrs. Stowe, whistle and all, was our tennis instructor. She took her job very seriously! Ha! Ha!

After we worked up an appetite, we enjoyed a nice picnic by the lake!

We also got to feed the ducks!

After lunch, we played a little more tennis!

I would have to say that this was one of my all-time favorite CBI trips. The weather was perfect and we all really enjoyed the day. We now have some AWESOME tennis players!

Cool Dog!

On this day, we had a very special visitor. This very talented dog works at the airport!

She showed us lots of cool tricks! She gave "high fives" and played dead!

We really enjoyed her visit. She was a cool dog!

Learning to Read!

We have been working so hard to learn how to read. We add new words to our word wall every week and practice them every day!

On this day, I asked Draylan, Lynec, and Mettano to go review their high-frequency words while we had a second between subjects. I was so happy to look over to see that they were working so hard. They were working together and acting like little teachers! It made my heart smile!

Their hard work in class is definitely paying off. They are just too precious!

Learning about Georgia and a Special Visit!

Learning about the state of Georgia was so much fun!

We learned about our state capital, state flag, state flower, state bird, state song, etc. We also got to taste peaches and peanuts!

On the same day, we had a very special visit. Mrs. Stowe's sisters, Ms. Lee and Ms. Jerri, and Mrs. Stowe's husband, Mr. John, came to visit. Ms. Lee is from Connecticut. She brought a book to add to our class library and many prizes for our prize box. Ms. Jerri brought one of our favorite dogs, Spike, to visit.

We added our new friends to our "So long, Farewell" goodbye song!  :-)

Mrs. Stowe with her sisters and Spike!

Thanks so much Ms. Jerri for always coming to visit and for bringing Spike for us to play with. Thank you Ms. Lee for taking time to visit us all the way from Connecticut and for your contributions to our classroom library and prize box. Thanks to Mr. John for taking time, on his day off, to visit our classroom.
It's so nice to have such a wonderful support system for our class. These people, along with many others, love our students as much as we do. We are a lucky group!

Newspaper Stars!

Draylan and Tony made the COVINGTON NEWS and NEWTON CITIZEN!

Draylan's picture was taken while helping clip the flag to the pole!

That's Tony right there in the orange jacket!

Way to go boys!!! What a wonderful way to represent Ms. Malcom's class as well as South Salem Elementary!
