Special Olympics Skating!

In December/ January, we participated in Special Olympics Skating at Rompin' Roll skating rink. We had such a wonderful time!

It was amazing to watch, over the weeks, students who could not skate (in the beginning) learn to skate on their own. We have some of the most determined kiddos around!

Bird Tree Christmas!

Every holiday season, Mr. John visits our class to share his "Bird Tree" tradition (from his childhood) with us. Mr. John reads a book that Ms. Malcom made him a few years ago. The book is a true story about Mr. John as a boy. His grandfather took him into the woods every Christmas to pick out a tree. They would saw a branch off of a tree so that they would not kill the entire tree. Then, they would take it home, build a stand for it, and decorate it for Christmas.

Mr. John brings tree branches screwed on to a base. He also brings lots of items and ornaments that we can use to decorate our trees!

First, we decorate our base by painting it and adding dirt, rocks, and snow (cotton)!

Then, we put on ornaments and artificial birds to decorate our tree!

Our final products were so beautiful. The kiddos were so proud of their creations!

Learning About Food Chains!

Learning about food chains was so much fun and very interesting. We learned about producers, consumers, predators, and prey. We even got the chance to make a poster of one of the food chains, from the ocean, that we learned about!

First, we had to paint our habitat (ocean)!

Then, we placed pictures of our plants and animals!

The last thing we did was review the ocean food chain that we read about in our story. We drew lines to represent the food chain!

Our finished products were so beautiful and we learned so much!

Special Olympics Bowling!

We had such a wonderful time this year at our Special Olympics Bowling events. Our kids love to bowl and they are very good at it!

It was little Miss Jayda's first time bowling. The ball was just about as big as her, but she carried it like a professional!  :-)

Oh Santoes!

These three get an award for "Most Supportive Team". They cheered each other on the entire game. They are such great friends!

Tony has gotten so much better since last year. He even bowled a few strikes!

Ms. Malcom's sister, Kelli, now works at Flint Hill Elementary. It is fun when they get to see each other at Special Olympics!

Ha! Ha! Shoe tying gone bad!

There is nothing more fun than getting to sit in the very back of the big bus!

South Salem Can Drive!

This year, our class was in charge of the South Salem Can Drive. We encouraged students to bring cans (to donate to a local food pantry) and picked up the cans, outside of their classrooms, every morning. We really enjoyed this task and South Salem students donated a lot of cans. It's a great feeling to be able to help others. I'm glad our class got to experience it!

Veteran's Day!

For Veteran's Day, we made cards for two of our favorite veterans. Mrs. Coard (Erica's mom) and Mrs. Stowe's mom both served in the United States Air Force. We wanted to show them how special they are to us and how much we appreciate their service!

Fighting Off the Flu!

The Friday before Thanksgiving break, we learned about the flu. We learned about symptoms of the flu and how the flu can be prevented. 

Then, we split up into groups, learned about different topics related to the flu by reading current events articles, and presented our articles to our classmates in creative ways!

Mrs. Stowe's group learned about pharmacies. They learned that many items can be purchased at a pharmacy to assist with minor injuries or illnesses. You can also get a flu shot at a pharmacy!

Mrs. Beckhom's group learned about germs and how we can fight off germs that cause illnesses such as the flu. They presented their article by putting together and performing a rap about germs!

Ms. Malcom's group learned about pharmacists. These three made the cutest little pharmacist that we have ever seen!

After teaching this lesson, guess who got the flu during Thanksgiving Break????? Yep... That would be Ms. Malcom!
